Having a green smoothie for breakfast is a wonderful, and fairly simple, habit to get into.
Not only do they taste delicious, but you can go into your day knowing that you’ve already nourished your body with a whole load of healthy nutrients and vitamins.
Here’s a smoothie recipe I often use (with variations included below):
Green Smoothie Recipe
Equipment
- Blender
Ingredients
- 1 handful almonds or cashews ideally soaked overnight
- 1 stick celery
- 1 banana peeled and maybe frozen
- 1/2 dessert apple (optional)
- juice from 1 lime or 1/2 lemon
- 1 handful blueberries frozen
- 2 handfuls freshly washed spinach organic if possible
- 1 tbsp chia seeds or flaxseeds
- 1 tbsp protein powder such as pea protein
- 1 tbsp wheatgrass or supergreen powder blend (optional)
- 600 ml water (about 2.5 cups) or as you prefer
Instructions
- Add all the ingredients to a blender and blend!
- Keep left-over smoothie in the fridge a glass jar with a lid for up to 24 hours.
- For a more 'green' smoothie replace the blueberries with 1/2 avocado and a thumbnail slice of fresh, peeled ginger
- For a more exotic, fruity smoothie, replace the celery, apple, blueberries, spinach and super green powder with frozen pineapple/mango and add coconut water or coconut milk.
- Finally, for a chocolatey smoothie, replace the celery, apple and blueberries with 2 heaped tbsp of cacao powder and 1/2 avocado and a handful of frozen cherries. Top with 1/2 tablespoon of raw cacao nibs for an extra antioxidant boost!
